Slide Collection

The slide collection consists of over 9,000 35mm colour transparencies.  The majority of these are photographs taken by the photographer Sam Abell while working on a project for the National Geographic Society.  Some of the pictures were featured in an article entitled "The Bonanza Bean - Coffee" by Ethel A. Starbird in National Geographic, 159(3):  388-405.  March 1981.  The photographer visited Brazil, Colombia, Cote d'Ivoire, Indonesia and Kenya as well as Austria, England, Greece, Italy, Japan, Norway, the United States and West Germany.  The pictures include scenes of all aspects of coffee cultivation, storage and transport, quality control, roasting and packing and people drinking coffee in a variety of different locations.  The collection does not include historical material, examples of coffee pots or illustrations of brewing methods, nor are there any examples of advertising material.

The slide collection is housed in the Library of the Organization and may be viewed by appointment.  There is a subject catalogue and members of staff may be able to assist in selection.  Duplicate slides may be purchased on request, subject to the conditions of use below.  Each duplicate slide costs £10.00, with a minimum charge of £50.00, payable in advance.  A higher rate of £100.00 per slide applies to slides requested for use in advertising campaigns.  The duplicate slides are normally available within 5 days of ordering.  Under no circumstances may original slides be borrowed.  The duplicates are in most cases 'first generation' reproductions of high quality transparencies and are suitable for printing and enlarging in colour or in black and white.

Digital copies of 200 selected slides are also available on CD-ROM. The two disks, entitled "Plantation" and "Processing", contain a hundred images and cost £100 each.
